Celebrate Summer Safely at the Ocean Expo at Torii Beach

This is a FREE joint-service event open to SOFA ID card holders and authorized guests taking place on Saturday, April 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Torii Beach. The expo will feature many fun family activities to enjoy along with exciting competition-based events to help improve ocean safety skills and awareness before the summer swim/beach season arrives.

FREE activities include:

  • Fun Land Rides and Bounce Houses*
  • Torii Beach Water Park Slide and Splash Pad*
  • Prizes and Giveaways
  • Skill Competitions for Kids, Adults and Families (see below)
  • Information Booths and Skill Classes
  • Lawn Games
  • DJ Music

*Get your Ocean Expo passport stamped at information booths and earn your kids (or yourself) a wristband ($15 value) good for enjoying FREE amusement rides in Fun Land, Bounce Houses and the Water Park.

After you’ve worked up an appetite, chow down at Coral Cove Food Booth, Chef Shack and La Cocina food trucks or enjoy ice cream from OkiScoops.

Do not bring pets, outside alcohol, glass bottles or coolers.

  • MCIPAC Safety: How to assess ocean conditions.
  • Torii Safety: Hazardous wildlife.
  • U.S. Navy Hospital: Heat Stress
  • 18FSS/18th Wing Safety: Rip currents and layers of protection for open water
  • MCCS Tsunami Scuba: First Aid for diving accidents. Assessing ocean conditions before diving and learn to scuba.
  • Red Cross: Disaster prevention, typhoon preparedness, CPR & AED.
  • MCCS Aquatics: Learn to swim and be a lifeguard.
  • Navy MWR: BBQ and fire safety.
  • Marine Corps Instructor of Water Survival (MCIWS): survival at sea and shallow water blackout.
  • Japan Coast Guard: General water safety for Okinawa coastline. 

SKILL COMPETITIONS

Register on-site, registration closes 10 minutes prior to each event.

  • 11:30 a.m.–noon Throw Don't Go Rescue Ring Toss (all ages)
    Practice throwing a rescue ring to a drowning victim with accuracy. This game is similar to cornhole.
     
  • Noon–12:30 p.m. Junior Lifeguard Race (16 and under)
    Test your stamina and compete like real beach lifeguards in this exciting race where kids will run, swim and carry.
    • Individual competition
    • 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes awarded
       
  • 12:30–1 p.m. Explore Snorkeling (all ages)
    Learn basic skills to ensure a safe and fun snorkeling experience.
     
  • 1:30– 2 p.m. Board Rescue Relay (15 and up)
    Learn important skills of board rescue, then compete in teams in a board rescue relay race.
    • Individual and team event, up to four participants per team
    • Individuals and teams will compete to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes
       
  • 2–2:30 p.m. Floating and Lifesaving (all ages)
    Learn techniques to help you in the event of being caught in a rip current.
     
  • 2:30–3 p.m. Baywatch Rescue Relay (17 and up)
    Test your strength, agility and swim skills in this team relay. Participants will run, swim, paddle, carry and use lifesaving techniques during tube and board rescues.
    • Team event, up to four participants per team
Compete to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes
